Halloween is a week away!

Halloween is only a week away! We haven’t done any decorating this year so I’ll have to enjoy looking at what others have done. I always appreciate my neighbor’s fun decorations!

 

Even though we aren’t as festive, we are all very proud of the ginormous pumpkin Riley grew!

 

Next year, I want to decorate up my fireplace mantel. I have goals to become more Halloween-y. lol!

It’s interesting how big Halloween has gotten. I always enjoyed it as a kid, but it didn’t used to be as big of a deal. You certainly didn’t see decorations in stores for months and months. Halloween has become big business!

Hmmmm…. I guess I better get serious about getting some costumes together for my kids. Last year, we all dressed up. I’m afraid that won’t be happening this year, but my daughter did come up with a great idea for her own costume and one for her brother as well. Good thing I’ve got her around!

Thirteen Days of Halloween

Every year, ABC Family runs an event for thirteen days leading up to and including Halloween where they show Halloween related movies. I always think to myself “we should do that” and then I go look at the schedule and think something like “I could come up with a better list than theirs”. Don’t get me wrong, I love what they are doing, but I don’t want to watch all the commercials and not all of their movie choices are on our list of favorites. So, I decided to finally create our own list and we are actually going to try to watch all of these. A lot of them will just be me and my daughter since my son won’t enjoy all of them. He has marked the ones that he would like to watch with us. This approach is smart for us because Riley LOVES Halloween and holidays in general. For Alex, it’s not such a source of joy. There are things that he likes about Halloween, but there are also some things that are not so great for him. I’ve always struggled with how to find the right balance for both of them.

 

Here’s our list:

1. Hocus Pocus
2. Ghostbusters
3. Young Frankenstein
4. The Nightmare Before Christmas
5. The Corpse Bride
6. Wallace & Gromit Curse of the Were Rabbit
7. Scooby Doo cartoons – the old classics (we haven’t decided which ones yet)
8. Harry Potter 6 (after we finish listening to the audio book – but any of them would be great Halloween movies)
9. Monsters Inc.
10. Mickey’s House of Villains
11. Casper
12. Halloweentown
13. Monsters vs. Aliens

 

And if you are looking for a fun Halloween movie to see in theaters, we really enjoyed Hotel Transylvania!

 

If you want to do your own 13 days of Halloween, it technically starts on the 19th and goes through the 31st. We are starting a bit early since we know we won’t really be able to watch a movie every single day for 13 days in a row. Of course, you don’t have to limit it to movie watching. You can pick any sort of Halloween activity and do something different each day. It’s a great way to enjoy this fun time of year!

Patriotic Parties

It’s getting close to the time of year when Americans like to show their red, white, and blue pride to celebrate Independence Day. (Canadians get in the spirit also with Canada Day.) I’ve been searching for fun patriotic party ideas on pinterest so I wanted to share some of my favorites with you:

Easter aftermath

The Easter Bunny came to our house and left some candy and cash for us all. My kids are teenagers, but the Bunny still comes each year. Each one of them got a dozen plastic eggs filled with $1 each.

 

I used these digi notecards to make cards to go with their baskets. Of course we had to have a little bit of candy…

Hershey’s chocolate eggs, Nestle Crunch chocolate eggs, and a few Lindt chocolate treats. All were chosen because they have no high-fructose corn syrup. Alex seems to get just as sick as I do from it so we just avoid it all together.

We had a lot of fun with the Play-Doh eggs!

 

Another fun thing we did this weekend was to color eggs with Koolaid. We found the idea on Pinterest and it worked great!
