National Candy Month

Did you know June is National Candy Month? True story! I think it’s fun to celebrate wacky little holidays and themes like this and my son and I have been enjoying bringing some of them to life over on the Toy to the World blog with our photo challenges.

Candy is a theme I can totally embrace. I definitely have a sweet tooth. I’ve heard it said that you get more addicted to candy as you grow older and I think that might be true for me. It wasn’t a big deal to me when I was younger, but I do crave it now. One of my grandmothers always had a drawer full of candy - but it was all yucky stuff in my opinion. She liked a lot of hard candies and those orange circus peanuts. Not me, I’m picky about my candy. I like high quality stuff. I’ve also figured out that I’m allergic to high fructose corn syrup (so is my son) and so I haven’t had jelly beans in a few years because of that. You can imagine I was thrilled to find that Gimbals fine candies is careful about their ingredients and their gourmet jelly beans are safe for us to eat. Let’s just say that Alex and I have been having a happy celebration with these yummy things!

I love the gourmet jelly beans. They are a lot like Jelly Bellys, but I think they are a lot more flavorful. My favorite flavor is the ice cream birthday cake. Yum! I also like the toasted marshmallow, buttered popcorn, coconut, strawberry cheesecake, and cinnamon. I did not like the java beans - but I don’t like coffee flavored anything so that isn’t surprising.

Both Alex and I are not fans of cherry flavor so we weren’t into the Cherry Lovers collection, but my daughter totally loves them and says they might be her new favorite candy.

Alex’s clear favorite was the sour jelly beans. He made actual yummy noises. I’m not usually into sour candies, but they are really good and quite addicting.

Candy (like any food) triggers many memories. I already brought up my grandma and her circus peanuts. I always think of her when I see those. I think about my Mom when I see regular m&ms because those are her favorite. My husband (who hardly ever eats candy) only gets excited about a few treats; chocolate covered cinnamon bears and peanut m&ms. I think you can see where I’m going with this…

There are memories associated with candy. Perhaps a great way to celebrate National Candy Month would be to document some of those memories? I think so!
