When my daughter and I went shopping this past weekend, we giggled over this t-shirt about hashtags. I’m not against hashtags in general, but they definitely have gone crazy and become quite annoying in many cases. When my Dad saw this photo, he emailed me and asked me what the # sign meant? This was my response:
They are called hashtags and they are a way to tag something so it becomes searchable. For instance, if you tag a photo with #disneyland then you will be able to click on that tag (it becomes a link) and see every photo that has ever been tagged #disneyland. They are useful if you are participating in photo contests or trying to be part of a community. A lot of people think it’s funny to tag something with a really long sentence like #iamsostinkingfunny – but then it’s not useful anymore, just a way to be silly. I actually wrote an article about how to use hashtags if you want to read it.
I know people who LOVE hashtags and use them all the time and I know people who get mad every time they see a # sign. People tend to have strong opinions about this topic these days. Whatever your opinion is, I bet you will find this video clip of Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake amusing. They are demonstrating how dumb it sounds to use hashtags. I do have to warn you that there is one bleeped out usage of the f word at the very end of the clip. You can’t hear it, but you can definitely tell that is what is said. I’m sad over how much that word is used these days. I’m not sure if people just don’t know how offensive it is, or if they just don’t care? Anyway, that’s a rant for another day. Today’s rant is about hashtags. If you don’t want to hear that part, just stop when the guy wearing the Hall & Oates shirt comes in at the end. You will have pretty much seen everything you need to by then.
Let’s ask an internet expert about hashtags. Grumpy Cat, what do you think?
Well, the cat has spoken. What do you think about hashtags?
