I’ve had plenty of reason to complain about contractors over the last few months as we have finished up our house, and I was starting to feel like there weren’t any good ones out there anymore. I’m so happy to be proven wrong! Amazingly, I had a great experience recently when I hired a painter to paint a set of bookshelves that we ordered from Ballard Designs. I loved the shelves, but the color looked all wrong in our house. They seemed way too yellow against the cool tones in our paint (Sherwin Williams Useful Gray – which looks a little different in each room of our home).
I really wanted to keep the shelves because they were the perfect fit for our space. They were not cheap shelves so it took a little time to decide on what to do with them. We decided to paint them white. In keeping with our agreement to hire painters for projects like this, I hit the internet and searched for a company. I wasn’t thrilled with the last painters I hired so I had to start from scratch. I decided on CertaPro Painters after getting a few different bids. They seemed the most thorough and able to do the job, and their bid came in to be quite reasonable. They did a really nice job and the shelves look like they were white from the very start and they look so much better in our house!
Naturally, I’ve spent many hours obsessing organizing the shelves with our books and globes. I pared down my globe collection quite a bit and just kept some of my very favorites on display. All the others are in a storage room right now waiting to see if they will find a home in other parts of the house. I blogged about documenting these collections in this article at The Daily Digi. I’d like to photograph more of our globes and books because I’ve put a lot of time and thought into gathering them over the years. Nothing is very expensive, but I feel like they are all little treasures that I have hunted down. After several weeks of fiddling, I’m finally happy with how the shelves are arranged.
I do wish we would have placed the cable cord outlet on the wall with the bookshelves so we could hide it. We just didn’t foresee that issue when we were sitting in the architect’s office. Oh well. I guess we will put a plant in that corner or something once we get furniture. All we have right now is 2 chairs that won’t be staying in that room. We need to look for new furniture as our old living room furniture has now become our basement furniture. We will get it all done eventually. These things take time (and money)!
I’m loving our new shelves. The white is so clean and cheery and feels nice after years of living with dark shelves. I’m also enjoying our home. The wood floor is probably my favorite feature, but the large windows are right up there as well. So nice to have a lot of natural light!
I’m especially happy with the paint job on the shelves. I haven’t found any drips or mistakes and they look really professional. I don’t know about all the CertaPro franchises, but the one I worked with was top notch. I was very surprised to receive a package from them a few weeks later with a little paint can full of taffy and a handwritten thank you note from the owner. It’s hard to find that kind of customer service these days!
Hooray for happy bookshelves!
