My kids start school today, but I’m looking back on my own first day of school. I’m the one with the dark green knee socks and the fashionable dress (made by my mom). This photo was taken on the front lawn of a rental home we lived in and the girl with me was my next door neighbor Julie. We were best friends.
This truly was my first day of school. The only preschool I had been to was a little neighborhood co-op that my Mom participated in the year before I started Kindergarten. The only thing I remember from that experience is that for a snack sometimes, we would dip banana chunks into Jello powder. I thought it was the best thing ever. I seriously don’t have any other memories of that “preschool” so I guess we know what was important to me back then. LOL!
I do actually remember my first day of Kindergarten. I can remember having both of these pictures taken. I can remember what my classroom like and I’m pretty sure it was the one that is pictured in back of us because I vividly remember looking out the front windows of the school and seeing the walkway to the front door. I also have memories of a boy who ate paste and I was so amazed that he would do that. He would pull a brush full of the chunky stuff out of the jar and lick it like a popsicle. One day, I decided I should probably try some to if I was missing anything. It was terrible and I could never understand why he liked it. I don’t remember my teacher or anything I learned, but I do remember the paste-eater. I enjoyed Kindergarten and I remember feeling happy during that year.
Do you have a picture from your first day of school? Do you know where it is? I bet the people in your life would love to see it and hear about your own early memories. Great things to document on a Memory Monday!
